If New York is on your travel bucket list and you like food, street art and unique experiences, this may be the perfect holiday for you next year.
Irish travel writer, Rachael Taylor Fawsitt, is hosting an ‘Off The Beaten Track in NYC’ group trip this February, together with travel partners Click & Go. The trip is open to anyone over the age of 21 and the itinerary includes some exciting and quirky activities.
We caught up with Rachael to find out all the juicy details of the trip and everything you need to know about booking your spot.
Hi Rachael, firstly can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your travel blog?
Sure, so I started my blog back in 2016 as a kind of online diary. I didn’t have any intentions of putting it out there, I just found writing so relaxing and a great way to channel my thoughts.
Around the same time, I went on my first solo trip which was a really big deal for me. I was at a crossroads in my life and decided to book a weekend trip to Italy and head off by myself for the first time ever.
Yeah, I was terrified going, of course, but I had an amazing time and was so, so glad I did it. That trip changed my life. It gave me such confidence and made me feel like I was ready to really start travelling. I realised that I didn’t need to wait for anyone else and that I could go anywhere I wanted. Since then I’ve just felt like the world is my oyster.
I started posting my blogs online after that, sharing my travels and experiences. Fast forward three years and I get to write as a freelancer now, it’s amazing how many areas of my life travelling has impacted.
What made you want to host a group trip to New York?
During that first year of travelling, I went to New York, again on a solo trip. It was somewhere I had always wanted to visit. I was obsessed with everything to do the city for as long as I can remember. The TV shows, fashion, art, everything about New York culture appeals to me.
That first trip to NY was fantastic, it totally exceeded my expectations. I even welled up when I walked into Central Park for the first time, I was just so happy to be there.
I’ve found that there is so much to do in the city when you step away from the usual tourist route. I’ve been lucky enough to make some brilliant friends there and they have taken me to some of the coolest places. Quirky popups, amazing bars and restaurants, galleries and street art, places that would never be in the usual travel guides. They have shown me the real New York and I really want to share that with others now by hosting this trip. I wanted to create a holiday for people like me, who are interested in going deeper when they travel and who like to explore.
What can people expect if they go on this trip?
The itinerary for the trip is really exciting. We’re going do a mix of activities and some really retro tours with local guides. One of the things I am most looking forward to is taking everyone on a lunchtime pizza walk around the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn. There are some fab pizzerias here and the streets are lovely to walk around too.
We’ll be doing a sunrise yoga tour of Central park one of the mornings, this is such a fantastic way to learn about the park’s history, as well as getting a light morning stretch in. Anyone who hasn’t done yoga before doesn’t need to worry, it is more than suitable for beginners. We’ll also be doing a sunset cruise around Manhattan, which will include sailing past Lady Liberty.
Another day, we will be doing a full day with a local tour guide. He’s going to take us all around Manhattan, show us some iconic TV locations and teach us loads about the culture of the city. I’ve also asked a New York photographer friend of mine to come with us and take some cool candid shots of the group for their social media accounts. This is obviously optional, but I thought it would be a nice thing for people to be able to share with family and friends afterward.
For food we’ll be visiting places like China Town, Hell’s Kitchen, the Upper East side and again Brooklyn. There are so many amazing places to eat in the city and I have a few personal favourites I can’t wait to take everyone to.
On our last night, we’ll be doing a street art tour of Williamsburg, we’ll also be checking out some of the bars there too, there are some really funky venues around here. We’ll finish off the night at a gorgeous rooftop bar and enjoy an incredible view of Manhattan together.
What should people know if they want to book?
The trip is open to anyone over 21 (years old), and I really want to encourage solo travellers to come along. I think this trip will be great for anyone who has been thinking about solo travel. They’ll have the support and comfort of being with a group, while still taking the leap and trying it for themselves. I would love to have a couple of friend groups with us too, it would be nice to have the mix of people.
The dates are February 1st – 5th 2019, and we’ll be coming home on an overnight flight, landing back in Dublin early on the 6th.
There has been a lot of interest since we launched the details of the trip last week, we’ve already had some bookings, so I’m very excited. I wanted to keep the numbers reasonably small, so that people can get to know each other and not be overwhelmed by a big group, for that reason, there are only 10 spaces available.
There are two price options, one for those who are open to sharing with a friend or fellow traveller and one for those who would prefer a private room. There is an option of a payment plan for anyone who wishes to use it and the booking deadline to secure a place is November 22nd.
I just want people to know that they are more than welcome to come along and that if they have any question they can contact me any time, they can find me on Instagram at @lovelytomeetme
